Goodbye, 2009!

The year 2009 is coming to its end. Tonight I will be sitting together with my closest friends, having a buffet, drinking beer and simply sitting together, celebrating into the new year. Towards the end of the year, you can find many flashback shows, articles and stories all over the place. In this blog, you’ll also be getting one. But not the ones you have seen so far. This is my personal flashback of the year, what delighted me, what got me upset, and mostly the answer to the question: “Chrissara, how was your year 2009?”

Update: Current Student Protests

Just yesterday I wrote about the current student protests going on here in Frankfurt and now I again have something to write about it. Last night the barricated building was evacuated by the Frankfurt police.

I had university until 6 p.m. yesterday and wondered, along with a few of my fellow students, why 27 police cars rushed by us with sirens and lights. We were philosophing about a bank robbery or something to the extent, but when I came home, I found out what was actually going on. Over a Twitter account from a guy being right in the middle of it all, you were able to follow the happenings promptly. Later on a regional tv station broadcasted a report. It seems that things went haywire: The police are reporting that the operation went smooth, the students that were present claim the police acted brutal. Furthermore they are now demanding the resignation of the university president, because he did not announce the evacuation before hand.

Current Student Protests

When I started thinking about writing about the current student protests going on here in Germany, my first thought was to which category I should tag this article with. Some of you may say that it is obviously the “Delights” one, because of the understanding for the content and reasoning of the protests. But then again, I think you cannot leave out the “Absurdities” tag, because there is also so much stuff going very wrong this week during these protests.

Student Discoveries, Episode 2

This week must be the week of my bizarre finds at my university.
This morning I was sitting in one of the student cafés at university where I was preparing a presentation with a fellow student. We had deserved a break so we each got a cup of coffee. Like in each of the cafés, you get a small chip, which you then give back together with your cup, in order to get back the 1€ deposit. At the Frankfurt University, it looks like this:

Great spelling, guys!

Student Discoveries, Episode 1

Educationalists seem to know better than anyone else, when they’ll be sick. I saw this notice on the door of   the Education Studies library dept.:

[translation: The Educational Studies library will be closed on Thur. October 22nd, 2009 from 7pm due to sickness.]

Surely, nobody just wanted to leave earlier, right…? ;)

3rd semester – week one.

Tag: Student natureChrissara @ 10:23 pm

The first week back at university is over. Well, actually today is my second day of the weekend already, since I again was lucky enough not to have any courses on Fridays. On monday morning I was happy to go back to university again – new courses, familiar faces, meeting friends and also simply having a daily routine again. You do need that from time to time. At the beginning of the semester (it is my third already, yikes!) everything is exciting, since it seems like everything is new again.

Right in my first seminar (the third part of a language skills course I have to visit) I knew again, why I just love my major: The professor walked into class with a mask on her face – like the ones from a carneval in Venice. Continue reading “3rd semester – week one.”
