The Spirit of Christmas

Christmas is practically around the corner (six more days!) and compared to last year, this year I am in Christmas Spirits. The past week I have been buying presents, baking cookies and looking out the window and watching the snow fall down on the ground.

This morning when I was checking the news online, I found a wonderful story on CNN.com that actually made me teary-eyed.

It is about how this anonymous benefactor called ‘Pete’ donates a big amount of money to a disability rehab center in Evansville, Indiana. Every year, shortly before Christmas, he calls the center and tells them to look somewhere specific on the center’s property, where they then find the money. All what he wishes for is that the money is used mostly for the children, for things that they and their families cannot afford.

In the middle of all the ‘bad’ news, this story made me think about how we actually mostly perceive negative news. Stories like this of Pete’s are not found very often anymore. And that, although it is those stories that make us believe in the world as a good place again. That there are people who care about others and not only of themselves. Stories that remind us, how we should also try to not only think on our own plate, but also at others. Maybe especially around Christmas, since this is the ‘traditional’ Christmas Spirit. But also whole year around: We should all be a little like Pete.
